Comparative Synthesis
CH48 — Comparative Synthesis: harmonizing emphases for classroom use
Why this chapter
By now you’ve met five teaching streams—Mogok, Mahāsi, Pa-Auk, Ledi, and Dr. Nandamālābhivaṃsa—each with its own doorway into the same house: the cessation of suffering via the Four Noble Truths and Paṭicca-samuppāda (Dependent Origination, “DO”). This chapter braids those doorways into one practical classroom arc you can teach and students can do—without diluting the strengths of any lineage.
Two anchoring points keep us honest:
-
Samatha + Vipassanā must work together to reveal the Four Noble Truths; neither lineage “owns” this claim—the Visuddhimagga itself makes the coupling explicit.
-
DO is not “simple arising.” It is a conditioned network taught in forward and reverse to cut eternalist and annihilationist views; treat it simplistically and you fall into diṭṭhi (wrong view).
With those stakes in the ground, here’s a full, classroom-ready synthesis.
One spine, five lenses
Think of your course as a spine with five lenses mounted along it:
-
Mogok: present-aspect DO, a visual wheel with “cause → effect → cause → effect,” showing the exit path when ignorance and craving lose power. Use it to de-mythologize “self” in real time.
-
Mahāsi: Satipaṭṭhāna-vipassanā pedagogy with continuous noting across the four foundations; deploy it to reveal the contact → feeling → craving seam repeatedly, all day long. For canonical footing emphasize how kāyagatāsati is praised as “savouring the deathless,” and where Satipaṭṭhāna sections steer toward insight.
-
Pa-Auk: elements-first analysis and fourfold origination of materiality (kamma, consciousness, temperature, nutriment) to de-reify “body” and stabilise deep samādhi.
-
Ledi: doctrinal anchors on Nibbāna as the unconditioned and DO as the structural grammar of the path; we’ll lean on Truths & aggregates framing to keep practice on-doctrine.
-
Dr. Nandamālābhivaṃsa: vedanā analytics—feeling as the hinge of DO; map contact → feeling in Abhidhamma terms and then show how feeling conditions craving in three modes (kāma-, bhava-, vibhava-taṇhā) for a hands-on craving lab.
Course architecture (12-week arc)
Through-line: sīla → samādhi → paññā, with the DO chain as the recurring whiteboard diagram; each week adds one lineage “lens.”
Weeks 1–2: Ground & view
-
Sīla lab: Right livelihood/intent speech check-ins to de-risk practice; draw from Visuddhimagga I on livelihood purification to set tone.
-
DO is not simple arising: introduce forward/reverse DO; put Mogok’s wheel on the wall; stress cause/effect alternation and “exit path.”
Weeks 3–4: Elements & the body
-
Pa-Auk elements lab I: 32 parts → four elements; show “not a being, not a soul” as you resolve the body into modes.
-
Elements method, four ways: constituents in brief; constituents by analysis; characteristics in brief; characteristics by analysis.
-
Kāyagatāsati emphasis: “They savour the deathless who savour mindfulness of the body,” positioning body-work as both samatha and vipassanā feeder.
Weeks 5–7: Contact → feeling → craving
-
Mahāsi noting ladder across six sense doors, then slow down at vedanā. Tie to Abhidhamma mapping of contact’s conditioning of feeling (eight ways at the five doors + decisive support elsewhere).
-
Craving modes lab: on the same objects, watch feeling flip into one of three cravings, building the classic 108 cravings grid; let students see how view (eternalism/annihilationism) piggybacks craving.
Weeks 8–9: Origination literacy
-
Fourfold origination practicum: trace what in the body is kamma-born, citta-born, utu-born, āhāra-born; include the nutriment→octad proliferation demo.
-
Result: students feel DO, not only think it: temperature cooks, breath moves, nutriment sustains—“no one behind the controls.”
Weeks 10–11: Aggregates & the unconditioned
-
Phena Sutta similes workshop: form as foam, feeling as bubble, perception as mirage, formations as plantain trunk, consciousness as magic trick—then observe in sitting/walking.
-
Nibbāna pointer: keep it doctrinal—asankhata, the unconditioned cessation, not a place. Anchor with Truths section and “path to liberation” overview that culminates in Nibbāna.
Week 12: Integration & assessment
-
Mogok wheel revisited: draw each student’s “exit path” in their own life-conditions (what ignorance looks like at 10am; where craving enters by 3pm).
-
Samādhi check: define concentration precisely; confirm access/absorption literacy and its function (non-distraction).
Method kits (step-by-step you can teach tomorrow)
1) Mogok “3-2-1 DO check” (micro-intervention for daily life)
-
3 sights you actually see today (phone pop-up, colleague’s tone, your back pain).
-
2 links to mark: (phassa → vedanā); say silently: “contact… feeling (pleasant/neutral/unpleasant).” Then watch what craving shows up (want more? push away? drift?). Anchor with the DO functions you explained earlier.
-
1 exit: where can ignorance drop? A single wise attention moment interrupts view-fueling; redraw the wheel with the exit arrow.
Why it works: you are turning a theoretical wheel into episodic memory—students literally feel where the chain tightens and loosens.
2) Mahāsi “noting ladder” (from scattered to seam-aware in 10 minutes)
-
Set the timer for 3 minutes—note rising, falling.
-
Add contact: when a sound/itch/visual arrives, note contact, feeling pleasant/neutral/unpleasant.
-
Add craving label when it shows up (wanting/aversion/wandering).
-
Return to rising/falling.
-
Review: at the bell, write one instance where feeling did not roll into craving.
Link to Satipaṭṭhāna’s focus on body and elements as insight-carriers, not only calm; this makes the ladder orthodox and safe.
3) Pa-Auk “elements lab” (disenchanting the body)
Aim: feel pathavi-āpo-tejo-vāyo directly; practice both “constituents in brief” and “by analysis.”
Protocol (20 min):
-
5 min body sweep: “stiff/soft (earth), cohesion/flow (water), warmth/cool (fire), pressure/expansion (air).”
-
5 min parts-to-elements mapping (e.g., teeth → earth; saliva → water).
-
5 min fourfold origination: notice breath (citta-born), ambient warmth (utu-born), post-meal heaviness (āhāra-born), inherited tone (kamma-born).
-
5 min voicelessness: whisper internally, “mere elements, not a being, not a soul.”
Pedagogical payoff: when students feel how matter arises and sustains (e.g., nutriment → octad proliferation), DO stops being metaphysics.
4) Ledi-style “truths & aggregates framing” (ten-minute re-centering)
When a student gets lost in special experiences, zoom out:
-
Recite the Truths map and point to its Nibbāna discussion—“unconditioned, not a scene.”
-
Revisit the aggregates with Phena similes (foam/bubble/mirage/plantain/illusion) to cool identification.
5) Dr. Nandamālābhivaṃsa “feeling microscope”
-
Place a neutral stimulus (clock ticking).
-
Ask: “Where is contact?” (sense-door + object + consciousness).
-
Name the feeling tone; log how contact conditions feeling in eight ways at the doors (teach this once on a slide; then, no jargon, just notice).
-
When craving arises, classify it as sense-desire, becoming, or non-becoming on the same object. Students see how view hitches a ride on feeling.
Real-world case studies (how the synthesis helps different students)
Case 1 — Nina, 29, startup PM, phone-tethered anxiety
-
Presenting pattern: sudden chest tightness → doom-scroll.
-
Plan:
-
Week 1 Mogok 3-2-1 DO check at each craving spike (notification ding).
-
Week 3 Pa-Auk elements lab: relabel “tightness” as earth (stiff), air (pressure).
-
Weeks 5–7 Mahāsi noting ladder: contact (ding) → feeling (pleasant/urge) → craving (reach).
-
Week 8 origination literacy: post-coffee jitters as utu-born agitation; āhāra-born heaviness after lunch; citta-born breath shifts when anxious.
-
-
Outcome measure: number of “not-picked-up” dings per day.
-
Teaching note: celebrate non-events; use the wheel’s exit arrow to mark each avoided pick-up.
Case 2 — Ko Aung, 41, engineer, strong absorptions, dismissive of “just noting”
-
Presenting pattern: lovely jhāna, but clings to purity experiences.
-
Plan:
-
Validate concentration as “profitable unification” with a precise definition (cut anti-intellectualism).
-
Pivot to aggregates: even bliss is feeling; show feeling→craving risk at the very peak.
-
Phena Sutta lab: bliss as bubble—lovely, transient.
-
-
Outcome measure: journal entries tagging craving at the jhāna periphery.
Case 3 — Maya, 35, teacher, low energy & aversion to the body
-
Presenting pattern: “I hate my body; it’s heavy and numb.”
-
Plan:
-
Start at kāyagatāsati—not for aversion but to savour the deathless via embodied attention.
-
Elements lab emphasizing air (movement) and fire (warmth); avoid harsh “repulsiveness” frames early.
-
Build energy factor skilfully—teach the Visuddhimagga list: investigation/clean base/balance faculties/good companions/etc.
-
-
Outcome measure: number of minutes of pleasant neutrality with body per day (not euphoria; just non-aversion).
Case 4 — U Htet, 33, skeptic, wants mechanics
-
Presenting pattern: “Show me causality or I’m out.”
-
Plan:
-
Put fourfold origination on the board; invite him to falsify it in his own day (e.g., temperature-born sweating; nutriment-born post-meal fog; mood-driven breath).
-
DO not present DO as “simple arising”—hand him the text for homework.
-
-
Outcome measure: weekly “causality diary”—three entries/day where he can name the origin.
Assessment & feedback loops
-
Daily seam count: “How many contact→feeling moments did you detect?” (Minimum viable insight metric.)
-
Craving taxonomy log: students classify cravings that arose at that seam (kāma/bhava/vibhava) to show doctrinal literacy and self-knowledge.
-
Elements checklist: each week, identify one kamma-born, one citta-born, one utu-born, one āhāra-born phenomenon.
-
Samādhi function check: quick oral—“What is concentration? What is its function?” Expect “non-distraction” and “eliminate distraction.”
Harmonizing tensions (typical teacher dilemmas)
“Do we start with calm or insight?”
Neither extreme. In weeks 3–4 we train elements (stabilising access) while reminding that those same body/element sections are insight conduits per the curriculum of kāyagatāsati.
“Will elements make people dissociate?”
Use the Visuddhimagga’s own guardrails: element-definition “eliminates the perception of living beings,” which reduces fear and dread—that’s clinical-grade grounding, not dissociation.
“How do I prevent lineage one-upmanship?”
Open with a sīla brief on right livelihood of teaching (avoid scheming, belittling, chasing gain with gain). You’re modelling humility as doctrine.
“What if a student fixates on attainment language?”
Return to aggregates “whatever is past, future, present… in the mass and in the gross”—keep attention broad and impersonal; then point back to the Truths.
Blackboard set-pieces you’ll reuse
-
Mogok DO wheel with double-headed arrows at connecting points and a clear exit arrow—draw it every class until they dream it.
-
Fourfold origination grid with day-to-day exemplars (breath = citta-born; kitchen heat = utu-born; snack fog = āhāra-born; inherited tone/posture = kamma-born).
-
Vedanā hinge: a minimalist flowchart phassa → vedanā → taṇhā with the three craving modes annotated.
-
Phena similes: five stickers: foam/bubble/mirage/plantain/illusion—slap them onto students’ reports of experience to normalize non-substantiality.
Putting it all together (a live 60-minute class)
0–5 min: Arrival ritual
-
Two breaths; draw the Mogok wheel; ask one student to point at today’s likely exit.
5–20 min: Elements lab
-
Lead a guided sweep through earth/water/fire/air qualities; cue simple phrases “stiff, cohesive, warm, moving.” End with “mere elements, not a being.”
20–35 min: Noting ladder
-
Breath noting; add contact→feeling→craving labels when they pop; return to breath.
35–45 min: Feeling microscope
-
Put a steady sound on; have them name the feeling and watch the first flicker of wanting/irritation/spacing-out. Classify the craving mode.
45–55 min: Origination literacy
-
Ask: “What’s utu-born right now?” Someone says: “Fan breeze.” Celebrate good causality detection.
55–60 min: Closure
-
One line on the board: “They savour the deathless who savour mindfulness of the body.” Bow.
Troubleshooting guide
-
Restlessness overwhelms: lean into samādhi’s function—non-distraction; use brief kasina or loving-kindness windows to gather.
-
Dullness: teach the energy-factor “eleven up-regulators” (review loss, see benefit, honour the heritage, change postures, seek bright company…).
-
“Self” panic during elements: quote the manual: element-definition abolishes the perception of beings and conquers fear and dread; lighten the pace but keep the frame.
-
View snags: if someone insists DO is just one thing causing another, assign the Kaccāna passage: seeing origination properly wards off annihilationism; your lesson plan has the reverse to check eternalism.
Why this synthesis is faithful (and useful)
-
It respects Pa-Auk’s demand for elements literacy and origination mechanisms (kamma/citta/utu/āhāra), in plain language with direct exercises.
-
It champions Mahāsi’s brilliant classroom engine—noting—but places it squarely on the doctrinal seam of phassa→vedanā→taṇhā so results are structural, not stylistic.
-
It leverages Mogok’s genius for visual pedagogy (wheel with exit path), the fastest way for modern minds to “get” DO and watch it in daily triggers.
-
It grounds in Ledi’s doctrinal gravity—Nibbāna as asankhata—so high experience doesn’t drift into metaphysical storytelling.
-
It applies Dr. Nandamālābhivaṃsa’s vedanā analytics as the practical hinge of the whole path.
Appendix: quick reference cards (print for students)
Card A — DO seam
-
When contact is known, feeling is immediately knowable; when feeling is bright, craving can be seen as it recruits view. (Three cravings on the same object.)
Card B — Fourfold origination
-
Kamma leaves structures; citta moves breath; utu heats/cools; āhāra sustains and proliferates octads. Watch one of each today.
Card C — Concentration defined
-
What: profitable unification; function: eliminate distraction; two grades: access & absorption.
Card D — Phena similes
-
Form = foam; Feeling = bubble; Perception = mirage; Formations = plantain; Consciousness = illusion. Remember this when clinging spikes.
Final word to the teacher
Keep the spine (DO + Truths) and function (cut craving at the feeling seam) visible every session. Rotate the lenses (Mogok Sayardaw 's visual, Mahāsi Sayardaw Teaching, Pa-Auk Sayardaw's elements, Ledi Sayardaw's doctrine, Sayardaw U Nandamālā 's vedanā analytics) in response to the student in front of you. You’re not mixing lineages; you’re completing what each points to, in a classroom reality where attention spans are short, bodies are dysregulated, and wrong view is industrial-strength.
The result? A course where students don’t merely believe the Dhamma—they can find the link, feel the function, and follow the exit.
